Auguste Vermeylen (1872-1945) était un illustre historien, littéraire et intellectuel. Bruxellois, il fut professeur à l'Université libre de Bruxelles, et s'engagea dans le mouvement anarchiste puis au sein du Parti ouvrier belge. Il se consacra dès son plus jeune âge à la littérature et la culture flamande, poussant le mouvement flamand à se développer (à la notable exception de la période 1914-1918 où il s'en éloignera suite à certaines collaborations avec l'occupant allemand). En 1923 il quitta l'ULB et se consacre à son enseignement dans l'université de Gand. Lorsque celle-ci sera flamandisée, en 1930, il sera nommé premier recteur de cette université.
