Hubert Lothaire (Rochefort, 1865 – Ixelles, 1929). Militaire, il embarque pour l’État indépendant du Congo en 1888, rôle actif dans la Force publique. Participe durant les années 1890 à la guerre opposant les troupes belges aux Arabos-Swahilis (Bantous musulmans), qui avaient précédé les Européens dans l’occupation du territoire et asservi les populations locales.
