Au XVIIe siècle déjà, on prenait cette voie pour se rendre à la chapelle dédiée à Notre-Dame de Ham, dans le quartier du Chat. En 1816, la partie entre la chaussée d'Alsemberg, à hauteur du Spijtigen Duivel, et la rue de Boetendael était connu comme la Borght straete. En 1914, elle s'appelait encore avenue des Fleurs. Après la Première Guerre mondiale, probablement en même temps qu'on créa l'avenue de Messidor, on lui préférait le nom de Floréal, du mois républicain qui va du 20 avril au 20 mai.
