Le nom de la rue fait référence à un arbre, en forme de ballon, qui aurait été déraciné lors d'une tempête en 1912. Depuis, deux arbres furent replantés au même emplacement, sur la crête séparant Wemmel de Jette, mais aucun des deux n'a la forme suggérée par le nom. (remark in French, as published)
