Le quartier situé actuellement autour de la Basilique de Koekelberg s'est organisé autour du patriotisme belge, sur l'initiative de Léopold II. Il devait y avoir un monument aux Gloires nationales, avant que ce projet ne tombe, au bénéfice de la Basilique. C'est ainsi que l'avenue prit ce nom. (remark in French, as published)
