Ce cimetière fut construit en 1874 face à la rapide extension de la ville. Il regroupe de nombreuses personnalités politiques et artistiques de la ville, ainsi que des mémoriaux aux deux Guerres mondiales ainsi qu'à la bataille de Waterloo. On pourrait dire qu'il s'agit de l'équivalent bruxellois (bien que beaucoup moins connu) du Père Lachaise parisien. (remark in French, as published)
