Voie créée en 1873, elle prit tout d'abord le nom de Rue du Bourgmestre étant donné sa situation, dans la prolongation de celle-ci. En 1922, les autorités communales la rebaptisèrent Avenue Géo Bernier, en références à Georges Bernier (1862 - 1918), célèbre peintre animalier et spécialiste du portrait équestre qui mourut à Ixelles.
