David Livingstone (1813 – 1873) était médecin d'une part, et géographe d'autre part. Il est à l'origine de tracé en Afrique pour le compte de la couronne britannique, jusqu'à sa disparition. L'expéditeur Stanley partit à sa recherche et le retrouva. C'est suite à ce fait que Léopold II demandera à Stanley de tracer les contours du futur Congo. 'Tout comme bon nombre d'artères du quartier, la rue porte le nom d'un personnage historique. Adoptée par arrêtés du Collège de la Ville de Bruxelles des 14.04 et 15.05.1877, sa dénomination rend hommage au célèbre missionnaire et explorateur écossais qui donna son nom à une ville de Zambie.
