L'idée initiale était d'appeler cette voie avenue Albert-Elisabeth, en honneur du neveu de Léopold II et de son épouse Elisabeth, mariés en 1900. Toutefois, pour éviter les risques de confusion avec d'autres artères avec plus ou moins le même nom, on pensa d'abord à Emile Zola, puis on décida de l'appeler avenue Molière, honorant le grand dramaturge français Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, dit Molière (1622-1673).
