Appelée à l'origine avenue de Longchamps, elle fut rebaptisée après-guerre en honneur du célèbre Premier ministre anglais Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill (1874-1965) qui accueillit de nombreux gouvernements en exil durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale et participa activement à l'issue du conflit.
