Ce toponyme désigne un mur de château, en l'occurrence celui construit par Charles de France, duc de Basse-Lotharingie, en 977. Le château ne se trouvait pas là à proprement parler, mais lorsqu'il fallut choisir un toponyme à ce tronçon de rue, on choisit de donner le nom d'une grande impasse qui venait d'être détruite : borgval.
