La rue Paepsem portait déjà son nom en 1185. Certains pensent que son nom dérive d'un nom de personne « Papo ». La terminaison « hem » laisse à penser que le mot existe depuis la période franque. Paepsem est un ancien hameau, également connu sous le nom de Poxcat, où la Senne passait. Il y avait un moulin et une tannerie. (remark in French, as published)
