Lorsque Joseph Poelart entame la construction du Palais de Justice, il fait expulser de nombreuses familles des Marolles dont une partie sera relogée dans ce quartier, où il a lui-même construit ce qui serait la première cité-jardin de Bruxelles. Le nom des carrés aux petites maisons ouvrières populaires construites dans la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle serait celui des premiers propriétaires de ces habitations, dont on ne connait rien.
