La Chaussée fut aménagée dès 1550 afin de faciliter le passage des marchands de bois qui venaient de la forêt et rentraient à Bruxelles vendre leurs charges. Le tronçon situé sur Ixelles s'appelait initialement chaussée d'Etterbeek. Une partie de la chaussée de Tervueren(Etterbeek) devient la chaussée de Wavre le 01/01/1917 (remark in French, as published)
