Longue rue déjà connue vers 1245 en tant que Didenweck puis Diedeweg. Au milieu du XIXe siècle, elle est aussi connue comme Postweg (chemin de la Poste). Léon Vanderkindere approuvera le nom actuel. Pour lui, il s'agit de Diet : Volk et Weg, soit le chemin du peuple, le chemin public. Ce chemin reliait de nombreuses communes du sud-est de la ville, et passait notamment par le Bois de la Cambre, obligeant de nombreuses communes à revoir leur toponymie pour éviter les confusions.
