Chantecler le coq est un personnage du roman de Renart. Ce roman est un assemblage de textes écrit en vers et mettant en scène des animaux. Le héros est goupil Renart. C'est ainsi que le mot Renart apparu dans la langue française et remplaça celui de goupil. Les textes sont des critiques sociales, et des textes psychologiques, destinés à être récités en public. On attribue la constitution de ce roman au XIIIe siècle, mais les textes sont parfois bien plus anciens. (remark in French, as published)
