'Place semi-circulaire occupant la partie sud de l’ancien Grand Béguinage, appelé ainsi par opposition au Petit Béguinage situé jadis rue Royale. Fondé sans doute peu avant 1247, il s’établit au lieu-dit «La Vigne», en dehors de la première enceinte, près de la Porte de Laeken. Florissant dès la fin du XIIIe siècle, il atteint son apogée dans la deuxième moitié du XIVe siècle. Pillé par les Calvinistes en 1579 et en 1584, puis par les Français en 1794, il fut supprimé en 1797. Les bâtiments furent confiés en 1800 à l’Administration des Hospices qui y créa de petits refuges pour femmes, formant les «Hospices réunis»' Urban (remark in French, as published)
