'Appelée dans un 1er temps pl. Willems, elle fut rebaptisée en 1870 du nom du poète flamand Jehan-Baptista Houwaert (1533-1599), qui possédait non loin de là une propriété appelée Petite Venise. Cette année-là, le 4 septembre, l'on inaugurait en effet au mil. de la place un monument à sa mémoire une fontaine flanquée de deux dauphins et surmontée d'un buste en bronze dû au sculpteur Louis VAN DEN KERCKHOVE (1814-1875). [...] En 1897, le Conseil communal décida le déplacement du monument qui entravait le trafic. Un autre buste du poète, sur un simple socle de pierre, fut inauguré le 19 avril 1958. Cette œuvre du sculpteur Jacques TALMAR venait compléter le nouvel aménagement de la place dont le centre est désormais occupé par un jardinet. ' Urban (remark in French, as published)
