'La place est dénommée en l'honneur du sculpteur Julien Dillens, né à Anvers en 1849 et décédé à Saint-Gilles en 1904. Il est l'auteur de plusieurs sculptures prestigieuses dans la capitale dont, à Saint-Gilles, la « Porteuse d'eau » de la Barrière. Dillens participe également, avec l'arch. Albert Dumont, à la coordination artistique de la décoration de l'hôtel de ville, dont il réalise plusieurs statues. Il collabore avec Auguste Rodin, qui travailla également à Saint-Gilles.'
