La place est nommée en hommage à un ingénieur britannique, George Stephenson. Né en 1781 et décédé mi-XIXe siècle, il est considéré comme l'inventeur du chemin de fer moderne par la construction de différents types de locomotives dont La Fusée, construite en 1829 entre Liverpool et Manchester. Elle a permis d'exploiter la première ligne voyageur. (remark in French, as published)
