Anciennement dénommée 'la rue de la Pierre Plate', la référence porte sans doute sur cette pierre plate posée devant les maisons seigneuriales et qui permettait aux seigneurs de monter et de descendre de leur cheval plus facilement. Cependant, l'explication du toponyme n'est pas certifiée, et il se pourrait que la référence porte plutôt sur la présence d'un 'steen', c'est-à-dire d'une grande maison en pierre, signe d'importance et de richesse à l'époque où les maisons étaient construites en bois.
