Ce nom proviendrait de la présence d'ouvriers anglais lors du développement industriel de Bruxelles. Ceci amena des édiles molenbeekois à donner des toponymes anglais aux sites industriels de la commune (Manchester, Lieverpool, Birmingham), ainsi que cette rue. La présence d'anglais en Belgique remonterait également à la bataille de Waterloo, où certains soldats se seraient installés au pays à la fin de la guerre. (remark in French, as published)
