Axe créé en 1864, deux hypothèses coexistent pour l'attribution de son nom. La première hypothèse l'attribue au compositeur de la brabançonne, François Van Campenhout (1779-1848), qui demanda un changement de nom afin de retirer la particule 'van'. S'en serait suivi une erreur administrative qui aurait placé Armand au lieu de François. Le second compositeur de la brabançonne, Jenval, avait effectivement reçu également l'attribution d'une rue (actuelle rue hôpital). La seconde hypothèse affirme que François Campenhout était en réalité le propriétaire du terrain sur lequel la rue fut construite. (remark in French, as published)
