Rue créée en 1863 sous le nom de rue du Couvent étant donné qu'elle prolongeait celle-ci. Lorsque la rue du Couvent fut séparée en deux tronçons, le second prit le nom de rue Charles Decoster en référence à Charles Théodore Henri De Coster (1827-1879), militaire et écrivain.
