La rue doit son nom 'à la déformation du nom de Jean Collay, propriétaire de terrains le long du fossé de la première enceinte (voir rues des Alexiens et de Villers), dont une partie fut offerte en 1368 aux Frères Alexiens ou Cellites pour l’installation de leur couvent, remplacé en 1829-1830 par I’« Hospitia XX in Uno»' (remark in French, as published)
