En 1854 fut inaugurée la Gare du Quartier Léopold, actuelle Gare du Luxembourg. Cette gare fut financée par la Grande Compagnie du Luxembourg, qui était en réalité une société anglaise. En effet, cette société souhaitait permettre aux britanniques de facilement et rapidement rejoindre le Luxembourg puis l'Italie. La Gare du Quartier Léopold fut construite à cet effet et financée donc par la société anglaise. Avec l'ouverture internationale engendrée, le quartier des alentours de la gare prit donc des références internationales. La place fut créée en 1854 à l'occasion. (remark in French, as published)
