La rue, ancienne du XIVe siècle, fait référence à un ermitage qui composait un vaste domaine avec une pièce d'eau. La rue était initialement dénommée la rue du Curé étant donné la présence du presbytère de l'église Sainte-Croix, puis prit son nom actuel malgré la disparition du domaine au milieu du XIXe siècle.
