Auparavant, les murs de l'enceinte de la ville étaient en partie situés sur le tracé de la rue, qui était alors beaucoup plus longue. Peut-être que lors de la destruction des remparts, une gouttière s'est naturellement formée. Quoi qu'il en soit, la rue porta ce nom. En néerlandais, elle fut baptisée la rue de la Mauvaise Gouttière, toponyme qui finit par s'appliquer également en français jusqu'à revenir à l'appellation simple de 'rue de la Gouttière'. ex. rue des Bogards (remark in French, as published)
