La rue de la Poste faisait partie de la voie commerçante liant Bruges à Cologne au XVIIIe siècle, par laquelle passaient les diligences. Or, le mot poste désignait à l'origine l'emplacement des chevaux dans leurs boxes, et par extension les relais de chevaux qui étaient utilisés successivement pour l'acheminement du courrier.
