'L’artère est [créée en 14.05.1879 et] à l’origine baptisée rue de l’Archiduc Rodolphe, en l’honneur de Rodolphe de Habsbourg, qui épousera en 1881 la princesse Stéphanie de Belgique. Peu après la Première Guerre mondiale, la rue reçoit une nouvelle dénomination, comme d’autres artères bruxelloises dont le nom faisait référence à l’Allemagne ou à ses alliés: elle est rebaptisée en souvenir d’une commune de Flandre occidentale, théâtre d’une offensive de l’armée belge lors de la Libération.
