Le nom de la rue vient de la région rurale, déjà citée en 1442, située au sud d'Itterbroeck. Etymologiquement scherdemael veut dire la largeur d'un pas (de mael (largeur) et de scherde ou schrede (pas)). Cette rue étroite porte donc bien son nom. (remark in French, as published)
