'Jusqu’en 1897, la rue formait la frontière entre Laeken et Neder-Over-Heembeek. Sa dénomination, diversement orthographiée au cours du temps – rue Want, Dewant, Dewand ou Dewandt – a la même origine que celle de l’avenue Wannecouter. En ancien néerlandais, le terme «wan» pouvait signifier vide ou non bâti, comme le lieu-dit Wannekouter, une vaste zone de terrains s’étendant sur Laeken, Neder-Over-Heembeek et Strombeek, qui resta longtemps en friche.'
