Les Boers étaient des colons d'Afrique du Sud (des Néerlandais pour la plupart) qui combattirent les Anglais, se disputant ainsi les territoires coloniaux d'Afrique du Sud. La compétition coloniale était forte, y compris pour les projets de Léopold II puis de la Belgique. Cette rue est donc une marque de soutien aux colons néerlandais et un signe d'opposition aux Britanniques. (remark in French, as published)
