Le nom de la rue fait référence aux entraînements militaires qui s'y produisaient ; Mars faisant référence au dieu de la guerre. En effet, le Champs de Mars était initialement une esplanade qui servait de champs de manoeuvres pour l'armée. Lors de la construction des boulevards au début du XIXe siècle, le terrain fut abandonné étant donné la forte urbanisation qui s'en suivi. (remark in French, as published)
