Ouverte par arrêté royal du 02.03.1874, elle doit sa dénomination, attribuée au moins dès 1872, à la proximité de l’Usine à Gaz de Laeken, implantée avant cette date dans l’îlot compris entre les actuelles rues Fransman, de Ter Plast et Charles Ramaekers.'
