La rue rend hommage à un peintre flamand né en 1823 et mort en 1901. Après une formation à l'Académie d'Anvers, il passa du temps à Paris, en Allemagne et en Italie où il découvrit de nombreuses artistes dont il s'inspira. Il est possible de retrouver de nombreuses oeuvres dans des églises et cathédrales flamandes. Il était également un portraitiste de l'aristocratie belge. (remark in French, as published)
