Le jeune Henri Van Zuylen était baron. A 27 ans, il embarqua comme second à bord du 'Comte de Smet-de Nayer', un trois-mâts. Celui-ci fit naufrage dans la nuit du 18 au 19 avril 1906, emportant la moitié de l'équipage et engendrant une polémique importante en Belgique. Le jeune baron est resté avec le commandant et le prêtre, sans chercher à quitter le bateau. Ce naufrage a ému la Belgique. (remark in French, as published)
