'Baptisée en 1905, la rue est percée à cette époque jusqu’à l’avenue Prudent Bols. Ce n’est qu’entre 1924 et 1929 qu’elle est prolongée vers Jette, entre l’avenue Bols et le rond-point du Pannenhuis. La dénomination de la rue rend hommage à Jean-Baptiste Jacobs (1835-1899), dont l’épouse s’appelait Fontaine et qui était notamment propriétaire de la Ferme Jacobs ou Laiterie du Heysel, située rue du Heysel et vraisemblablement disparue peu après 1904.'
