Cette rue rend hommage à Jules Destrée, écrivain et homme politique belge né en 1863 et mort en 1936. Il est principalement connu comme membre actif et enthousiaste de la revue littéraire « Jeune Belgique » et pour avoir été à l'origine des bibliothèques populaires. Ministre des Sciences et des Arts en 1920, il prend rapidement conscience des clivages communautaires et est régulièrement considéré comme l'ancêtre du mouvement wallon.
