La rue a été nommée après Mattheus Kessels, sculpteur né à Maastricht en 1784. Après sa formation, il partit s'installer à Rome. Bien qu'ayant un style néo-classique au début de sa carrière, celui-ci ne cessa d'évoluer pour prendre des tournants plus sentimentaux. Quelques années avant son décès en 1836, le poste de Directeur de l'Académie des beaux-arts de Bruxelles lui fut offert. (remark in French, as published)
