Deux hypothèses coexistent quant à l'origine de cet odonyme. La première hypothèse, de Jean d'Osta, fait référence à la présence d'un cabaret dénommé 't Lange Leven. La seconde y voit plus une forme d'ironie populaire car la rue était connue pour ses habitations insalubres. Dénomination antérieure à 1810. (remark in French, as published)
