Cette rue est très ancienne et était très pentue, ce qui la rendait impraticable par mauvais temps. Ceci explique la montagne, mais pas les anges. Initialement, cette rue s'appelait 'Montagne des Anges', mais aucune précision n'a été retrouvée. Cela pourrait également faire référence à un ancien cabaret portant ce nom.
