L'origine du Mundaneum remonte à la fin du XIXe siècle. Créé à l’initiative de deux juristes belges, Paul Otlet (1868-1944), père de la documentation, et d’Henri La Fontaine (1854-1943), prix Nobel de la paix, le projet visait à rassembler tous les savoirs du monde et à les classer selon le système de Classification Décimale Universelle (CDU) qu’ils avaient mis au point.
