'Ouverte fort probablement au XVIe siècle, elle portait le nom du propriétaire terrien de l'endroit : rue Piermont. Une erreur d'écriture fait que, jusqu'à l'occupation française, elle porte le nom de rue Piermans. Un traducteur français (?), constatant que « pier » en néerlandais signifie « ver, asticot », traduit rue Piermans par rue des Vers. En 1920 apparaissent les plaques odonymiques bilingues.
