La rue porte le nom d'un peintre belge, né à Vilvoorde au début du XIXe siècle. Etudiant à l'Académie des beaux-arts de Bruxelles, il est renommé pour ses compositions de type orientalistes, dans la veine de Delacroix. Dès le milieu du XIXe siècle, il est devenu Directeur de l'Académie de Gand avant d'être à la tête de celle de Bruxelles. Il décéda à Bruxelles en 1895. (remark in French, as published)
