La rue rend hommage à Sualem Renkin, inventeur né à Jemeppe-sur-Sambre au milieu du XVIIe siècle. Sa plus grande invention fut un système de pompage de l'eau des mines. Louis XIV demanda à ce qu'elle soit perfectionnée et construite pour pomper l'eau de la Seine vers les jardins de Versailles. Colbert s'appropria la paternité de cette invention.
