Plusieurs hypothèses coexistent. La première attribue cette appellation à une référence aux massifs montagneux, expliqué également par la proximité de la Rue du Mont-Blanc. La seconde hypothèse affirme qu'il s'agit en réalité de la rue du Saint-Bernard et qu'elle ferait référence au fondateur de l'abbaye de Clairvaux, dans l'Aube. (remark in French, as published)
