Philippe Vandermaelen (1795-1869) est un géographe et cartographe ayant vécu dans la commune. Il est connu pour avoir fondé en 1830 l' «Etablissement Géographique de Bruxelles». Il a établi de nombreuses cartes de haut niveau scientifique et lithographique, notamment l'Atlas Universel, publié entre 1825 et 1827. Ses ateliers étaient situés dans ce quartier, ce qui explique plusieurs noms faisant référence à la cartographie : rue Vandermaelen, rue du Niveau et rue de la Borne.
