Relié à l'Avenue Coghen, il fut tracé en 1929 sur un terrain marécageux qui appartenait à la propriété Coghen. Financier important, le comte Jacques-André Coghen (1791-1858), fut sénateur et Ministre des Finances du premier gouvernement mis en place par Léopold Ier. Il habita le château de Wolvendael. L'avenue et le square furent tracés sur l'initiative de la comtesse Coghen. (remark in French, as published)
