Nommée ainsi en 1885, mais existant depuis 1860, comportait une allée pour cavalier. Fait partie des plans de réaménagement de l'urbanisme de Bruxelles par le roi Léopold II et son fidèle collaborateur Victor Besme (1834-1904). Le palais royal était ainsi relié à l'ancienne Place de la Couronne (actuelle place Blyckaert) via la rue du Trône et la rue du Trône prolongée qui sera en 1885 renommée Avenue de la Couronne.
